An old piece given a new life.
Old antique pieces are some of the best furniture ever made. The saying “things aren’t made like they used to be” is completely true! The old pieces have such great bones and are made exceptionally well. No plastic, or fake wood in them, but instead great solid wood throughout.
This is what we look for when nabbing pieces for our store. We love to work with antique pieces, however, sometimes those antique pieces are not in the best of shape. They come dirty, or beat up, or downright broken… But that never deters us! Instead of tossing it, we come up with some way of making it new again!
This piece, for example, while it looks like it’s in pretty good shape in the picture, in actuality it had some parts that definitely needed to be addressed.
And just look at it now!
You can notice a couple big changes right away. First, the top drawer is gone! Like I mentioned, even though the piece looked great from the outside, it had a major flaw on the inside. The top drawer had a massive crack running the entire length of it. We have replaced many drawer bottoms in our day, which is perfectly acceptable. But instead we decided to change this piece up and put in a top shelf!
We thought it would look beautiful to have extra open storage – great for decor. It would also be perfect if it was used as a small TV stand, the boxes would fit wonderfully on that shelf!
The bottom of the drawer wasn’t the only flaw we found that you can’t see in the original “before” picture. There were 4 nails on the top of this cabinet that needed some pounding in to sink them into the wood. We then filled them to make it a smooth top.
For some pieces, we embrace the flaws because they just add a bit of character to it, but for this piece, we wanted the smoothness and of course no huge crack in a drawer!!!
This pretty little piece was then painted with a beautiful soft almondy-beige color from Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint. It is absolutely beautiful! (Well all of the MMSMP colors are beautiful!)
What a sweet addition it would make to any home!
