Second Laundry Update – A Folding Counter!
Ooohhh! Here’s another very small project that I recently completed and am SO happy about! I used to be able to get whole house updates done in a short amount of time and now it seems like the smallest details that I can get done are SO amazing. And they truly are – take the wins when you can!
In my old home I created my own built-in folding counter over my washer and dryer that I absolutely loved. After a while in my new home I missed the nice flat counter and inconveniently kept losing clothing pieces that would fall behind the appliances.
However, after thinking about it I realized the way the piping is behind these particular washer and dryers it wouldn’t work the same way as before. I thought about it for a while and honestly didn’t want to take a lot of time into making my own counter. I knew that Home Depot had butcher block countertops in pre-cut dimensions so I measured my space, compared the countertops available, and found the perfect fit!
In my local Home Depot store they only came in even number lengths and I needed a 5 foot length, but after a quick look online I was able to order the size I needed.
After arrival I dry fit the counter to make sure it would fit and man was it heavy! I was happy about that though, as then you know it’s good quality. Again, because of the way my water lines are in the back of the appliances I was unable to attach the countertop to the back wall. I decided to add some buffer (felt pads) underneath the wood countertop and I’m just resting it on top of the appliances. It is so heavy that so far my multiple loads of laundry on most days has not budged it. I think it will work out really nicely. I do have the option to attach it on one side if I think it needs it, but I will wait and see.
It was a quick stain and sealant job – I decided to go with the same water-resistant sealer that I added over my sink countertop so it would be extra durable.
To finish it off I put back my tray that I keep over the washer that has all my essentials in it. I use a natural powder detergent from 1924 Custom Soapery which fits into that beautiful white canister (purchased from our boutique!) Also on that tray I keep my wool dryer balls and a collection of small glass bottles I use for decor all around my home.
I feel like the countertop over my washer and dryer just “finished” the space. It looks more built in, is functional and very cute. It seems to pull the room together more.
Two small projects can now be checked off the list! But even though they are small, it has been highly satisfying to get them done! So moral of the story, even if you don’t have a lot of free time to complete big projects, little ones are still great to get done – even if it’s a touch-up paint job!
