When we first saw this little sewing cabinet at an auction we fell in love at first sight! There are just some pieces that we feel like we have to have. This cabinet was so cute, but a little more mid-century than we normally tend to makeover, however it was in fabulous shape so we decided to give it a try. We also loved that instead of skinny drawers, the entire front was a door for bigger storage space which is very practical.
The design for this furniture piece was to go clean and sleek. We loved the vintage hardware and really wanted to bring it out, so we decided we wanted to go almost stark white with it, so Annie Sloan’s “Old White” would be perfect! (Old White is also one of our very favorite colors to use 🙂

To start we did have to do some patching since there was a large gouge on one top edge and the inside shelf was in rough shape. We always use Elmer’s stainable wood filler for holes or gouges because of it malleability. It is very easy to work with since it stays wet long enough to move it around. We also had to sand down and re-stain the inside bottom shelf because it was in terrible shape. It was well worth it to take the time to sand down and stain that shelf, the darker color really elevates it for a richer look.
After sanding down and staining the inside, this little beauty was ready for some paint. We applied two coats of Annie Sloan’s “Old White” to the entire cabinet. We made sure to cover everything very smoothly for we didn’t want any distressed looking parts.
After the paint dried, we used our favorite sealer, Minwax Finishing Wax to end the project. Only one good coat of wax was applied and then buffed with a clean rag for that beautiful creamy matte finish.
This sweet little cabinet was finished pretty quickly, only taking a couple of days, but looks beautiful with its transformation. It would be the perfect little side table for virtually any space in your home. Not only is it a cute table, but it has a nice little storage space for functionality!
