What a beautiful powder room makeover, and for only $100!!
It’s finished! Oh what a wonderful makeover, finished in just one month and for only $100! We always have so much fun joining in with Erin of Lemons, Lavender and Laundry for this biannual challenge. It also kicks our butts into gear to finish or change up a room of ours!
If you are just joining in for the first time, take a peek at the first four weeks by clicking the links below. If you have been following along with us – Thank you! But no matter what, you are in for a treat with today’s makeover story!
Week 1 / Week 2 / Week 3 / Week 4 / Week 5 (You are Here)
To begin, lets take a look back at the “before” pictures of this room, and the list of everything we needed to accomplish for this makeover.
It’s a small powder room and the only bathroom in Vicki’s downstairs. It is right off the kitchen, not very big, and despite that pretty vanity, it doesn’t have much for storage. (The vanity was built over the existing basement stairway and is therefore faux. It only has one functional drawer!)
Here was our list of what we wanted to accomplish for this room:
- Build a storage cabinet
- Build a shelf
- New light fixture
- Paint an accent wall
- New towel holder
- Redecorate using items from around the house
- New Mirror
We were able to get almost everything finished UNDER our budget! Not under by much either! Almost half of the budget was spent on the light fixture (But that was totally worth it). The next largest portion of our budget went to the window wall cabinet and the ladder shelf we DIY’ed. Lumber is not as cheap as it used to be! We always try to at least purchase it when it’s on sale, but we were able to create that awesome wall cabinet above the toilet for much cheaper than you could have bought it for! And it really looks great! Vicki is now able to have extra toilet paper, a couple towels and pretty decor in there! She can then reserve the drawer for the more unsightly items, for example, band aids.
We were able to get just a small quart of paint for the alcove accent wall, and we are really happy with the added color in there. It does make the room a tad bit darker, but we love the impact it gave. And because it was such a small wall, we have a lot of paint leftover to use for any other projects around the house!
This last week was all about putting everything together again, hanging and decorating. Vicki looked for a mirror and while she found a couple in storage they were either too big or not the right style for this bathroom. So instead of going out and buying one, Vicki came up with an idea to make the existing mirror work!
And how cute is that! All she did was paint the mirror the same shade of white as the cabinet! However when we put it up on the wall, it looked way too stark white in there…So we decided to take a wet cloth and wet distress the chalk paint back. That brought out the pretty bronze coloring from underneath which now ties in with the light fixture and the towel hanger!
We were also able to make a wood plaque from leftover lumber to help decorate the space. We make these framed wooden plaques for our Brick and Mortar store and also sell them in our Etsy store, and it is SO NICE to actually be able to make them for our own homes! We both have been wanting one for a long time, but our items always seem to come last.
And here is a look at our budget for those of you who like to see the numbers. We just made it!!
- New Light Fixture – $42.74 (Find it HERE)
- Lumber for shelf – $10.73
- Lumber for Window Cabinet – $21.59
- Quart of Paint – $15.98 (HERE is the color we chose)
- Towel holder – $5.99 but we purchased it at half off for $2.99!
Total Budget used: $94.03!
Whew! We were a little worried about the budget after purchasing all of those supplies in the very beginning of this challenge, but we pulled it off!
And it was a really tough final week. Vicki has been very busy with family and the weather in Minnesota turned bitterly cold. Seriously, there was a polar vortex up here with -50 degree wind chills! So a couple days we were completely out of commission to work on our projects, but boy does it feel good to be able to be finished!
Thanks for stopping by to see what we could accomplish with only $100 for a room makeover! Don’t forget to see how everyone else did via the links down below!
