Milk Paint is an ancient form of paint that comes in powdered form and must be mixed with water. It is the perfect paint to create a timeworn, vintage or chippy look to your furniture piece. You can also create a perfectly opaque coverage by adding a little bit of bonding agent to your paint. Because there are only 5 natural ingredients, milk paint can sometimes be unpredictable over glossy surfaces. It is best to prepare your piece by cleaning and lightly scuff sanding. If you want to achieve a chippy look a quick clean may be all you want to do!

Milk Paint works beautifully over raw wood as it soaks right in. Since it is a porous paint it must be sealed. Wax, hemp oil or tough coat are great options.
‘Move Mountains in Your Home’ with Milk Paint!
Mixing: Mix approximately 1 part water to 1 part milk paint powder with spoon, whisk or small paint blender. (We use a plastic cup or wide mouth mason jar and a plastic spoon!) Add tepid water to container first, then add milk paint powder slowly and mix for 3-5 minutes. Let sit for another 5-10 minutes. If the paint is translucent or runny, it is too thin. If the brush drags and the paint appears gritty or chunky, it is too thick. Add more water or powder accordingly and mix again. Apply paint evenly in long, smooth strokes with a brush or roller. Stir paint occasionally as pigments may settle at the bottom of the container. Drying time is approximately 30 minutes. Two to three coats may be necessary to achieve your desired coverage and possibly more when applying a light color over a dark surface. Lightly sand with a 220 grit sandpaper to smooth surface. Remove dust. A top coat is required to protect the paint and bring out the richness and depth of the color. We recommend MMS Hemp Oil for a natural finish or over the vibrant/rich colors like Artissimo, Tricycle, or Typewriter. MMS Furniture Wax can also be used for a sealer for a hand-rubbed appearance. A polyurethane or varnish of your choosing may also be applied.
