It’s bathroom makeover reveal day!
We are so excited to be sharing the end result of our month long challenge with you all today! If you’re new here, the month of January was spent making over one room, with only a $100 budget! Thanks to our friend Erin of Lemons, Lavender and Laundry for hosting this fun challenge! If you missed the past 3 weeks, make sure to check them out here:
If you remember from our first post on the $100 Room Challenge, we had decided to makeover Vicki’s guest bathroom. Lets take a look back at what we had to work with.
At that time, the updates that we wanted to complete were as follows:
- Paint the walls an aqua color.
- Re-do the existing mirrors.
- Add Chunky wood shelving to the wall above the stool.
- Restyle the towel hooks in both the shower room and by the vanity.
- Update the hardware on the vanity and other cabinets.
- Update the décor.
In week 2, we told you about the paint color we had chosen for the walls – a pretty minty/aqua color that Vicki had leftover from painting her laundry room! We also showed you how we prepped and painted the mirrors over the vanity, used the existing hooks for new towel bars, as well as reusing the knobs from the vanity and cabinets.
In week 3, we illustrated our DIY bathroom shelf from a board we found while cleaning out a shed on the farm. This board was previously used as a waterbed side rail several years ago! We also gave you a sneak peak at the towel hooks and hardware that we had redone.
Now here we are! Finally to week 4 and the final reveal! As we previously mentioned, we were going to use a pewter finish on the knobs, hooks and mirrors. But as you now know, we changed our minds! Because we went with the chunky wood look for our DIY shelf with Oil Rubbed Bronze brackets, and thus bringing in those brown tones, we decided to tie in that same look with the towel hooks, knobs and mirrors. Are we ever glad we did! We love the contrast between the light oak cabinets and the darker knobs.
In addition, carrying the oil-rubbed bronze color to the mirrors, and the wood theme and same oil-rubbed bronze color to the towel hooks really tied everything together. (This is the paint we used for the hooks, knobs and mirrors).
We added a little bit of décor to the top of the vanity. The only new item, was the white iron pedestal (we purchased it here). We placed some of the items that were previously in the bathroom, as well as a couple items from other areas of the house on the pedestal.
In the beginning we also talked about using two chunky wood shelves above the stool, but again, we changed our minds! We decided to go with only one chunky wood shelf even though we had enough of the board to make another shelf or two. Vicki really wanted to utilize a plaque with one of her favorite quotes somewhere in this bathroom. There really wasn’t space on any other wall to hang a plaque, so we decided to install only one shelf and place the plaque on the same wall as the shelf. {Watch for our DIY plaque in a later post!} As you can see, we also decorated that shelf with one of our favorite décor items – preserved boxwood topiaries. The green from the topiaries, in addition to the wood, brought a little bit of the nature from outdoors to the space. Another one of Vicki’s favorites!
One final spot in the bathroom that we updated a bit, was the bench in the shower room. Vicki had purchased the wire basket and filled with badly needed new towels several months ago. We decided to keep that basket and the towels in place, but added a little décor on the wall. This is a rusty iron piece that Vicki had picked up at a flea market last summer, but just hadn’t hung it up anywhere.
Old iron pieces at flea markets and such really catch Vicki’s eye and she usually buys them and THEN tries to decide where she wants to put them! We know the space needs a little something below that iron piece though. Perhaps a pretty print or plaque? We will surely be watching for the perfect piece for that spot!
Did your eye catch the rug on the floor? If you will recall, we had picked out two rugs, but couldn’t decide on which one to use. After the paint and all the newly restyled hooks, knobs, and décor were put into place, we put both rugs down so we could decide which one we liked. Hands down it was the lighter one. This rug ties in all the colors of the bathroom. It has all the beige, white and aqua tones. All the colors Vicki had previously bought in her new towels several months ago! How lucky is that?!
Here is the recap of the final tally for our guest bathroom makeover:
Rug $30.01
Pedestal $13.18
Shelf Brackets $16.02
Small topiary $13.02
Bath Mat $13.04
Wall Paint (1 Qt) $10.53
Mirrors 0
Hooks 0
Boards 0
Knobs 0
Plaque 0___
TOTAL $95.80
Since we reused and restyled as many items as we could, as well as utilized leftover paint (except for needing an additional quart), and boards we “found” or already had in our scrap pile, we were able to keep our costs down. We love reusing, restyling and DIY! This challenge really got our creative juices flowing.
A couple of items we will continue to change in this bathroom: The light fixtures over the vanity will receive a “new” look with the same oil rubbed bronze paint that we used on the mirrors, knobs and hooks. In addition, the toilet paper holder will receive the same treatment. And as we mentioned, Vicki will be looking for the “something” to add to the wall over the bench.
We sure hope you have enjoyed seeing this final reveal as much as we enjoyed re-doing the room!
