Guest Bathroom Makeover Update
Hi there! Kristen here to give you an update on how our challenge is going for Vicki’s guest bathroom makeover on a $100 budget. If you missed last week’s post on the “before” of the bathroom and what our plan is, see that post here.
Week 1 / Week 2 / Week 3 / Week 4
Otherwise, here is the space we are working with:
We began our project by gathering all of our supplies; 1.) so we could see what we already had on hand to work with 2.) we only wanted to go out once to buy extra items, instead of multiple! We decided that new paint would need to be bought for sure, lumber for our DIY shelves, and a rug.
While prepping the room for paint, Vicki realized that her existing hooks unscrewed from the backplates. This would allow us to reuse them for our new towel hooks we want to pair with wood. So we added spray painting the old hooks and existing knobs on the cabinets to the list of items we need to do. Luckily we already have oil-rubbed bronze spray paint in our stash at home and didn’t need to purchase that.
The mirrors came down off the wall, got a swift clean up, as well as taping up the mirror itself so it is also ready for paint. All the hardware including hooks, knobs, mirrors and light fixtures are going to get a new look.
Once the room was cleaned and prepped, Vicki was able to start the painting. Unfortunately for her she is stuck with all of the painting work by herself for this project since I am pregnant! (Sorry mom!)
We picked up a new color that was a medium dusky aqua color. However, when Vicki began painting it in the shower room she realized it was going to be too dark. Not good. Well this isn’t the first time we have changed our mind! Vicki just stopped where she was and we came up with a plan B. So we went to the garage and found extra paint leftover from Vicki’s laundry room that we already loved! It was quite a few shades lighter than what we originally picked out and is going to work perfect!
Here is what we have left to finish:
- Finish Painting (2nd coat)
- Spray paint knobs, mirrors, light fixtures and hooks
- Make shelves
- Construct towel hooks
- Paint plaques
- Decorate
Ok that’s kind of a lot…No worries! It will get done!
Now we want your opinion. While shopping the other day, we found a couple rugs that we really like for this space. Which one do you think we should go with? We love the color that the all blue one would bring to the lower half of the bathroom, but the other is super pretty too!
Let us know what you think! And don’t forget to check out how all of our other challengers are doing with their spaces below. We will be back next week with one of our DIY projects we are working on for this bathroom makeover.

I’ve done that a few times with paint colors! And I’m sure I will again at some point! LOL! I love the blue rug! It really gives it a pop of color!
Kristen & Vicki says
Thanks for your rug input Natalie! We have done it before too, but we don’t despair, just change it!
Deborah says
Oh paint colors changing!! UGH! I had a time where we started painting and it didn’t seem right. We went to another store and picked another can of paint and it was the exact same color. Needless to say it stayed that way. 🙂 I like both rugs but am partial to the lighter for some reason.
Patti says
Paint colors are though. It seems like light colors always appear to be darker, and dark colors always come out lighter.? I think I like the darker rug but they’re both cute. Can’t wait to see how turns out.
Kristen & Vicki says
Yes paint colors are a challenge! I think I found one I love though! The rug is going to be a tough one to choose – I like both! Can’t wait for the final reveal. ~ Vicki
Carrie says
I absolutely love the all blue rug but either way the room is going to be gorgeous!

Thank you Carrie! I am loving the color and can’t wait to get this room all finished! Hope you visit back to see the final reveal. ~ Vicki

I love the rug on the right of the mood board image! 🙂

Yes, I love both! I am going to have such a tough time choosing! ~ Vicki

Thank you Maria! A new paint color can do amazing things! I am so looking forward to finishing this room! ~ Vicki
Meredith @ The Palette Muse says
I know how that goes with picking paint colors! Oh well, I’m sure you’ll be able to use the darker paint somewhere in the future and save money on the next challenge. 😉 Those rugs are both beautiful, and I think the blue one is my favorite, but the gray might actually work better in that space. Either way, you can’t go wrong!
Kristen & Vicki says
Absolutely! I am sure we will use that darker paint in another project. It is a beautiful color, just looked dark in my windowless bathroom! I love both of the rugs and having a difficult time choosing. Maybe once the room is complete and I try them out in the space, it will be easier. Hope so! ~ Vicki

I am always impressed with the power of paint! Just a little bit of elbow grease and time and you can completely transform your space! Can’t wait to see it come together.
Kristen & Vicki says
Thank you Eliesa! We can’t wait to get the room finished!

I love that color! It looks like you’re making some great progress in there.

Thank you Colleen! We love the color too – it is one of our favorites! Hope you stop back to continue to see our changes!

beautiful color. I loved the blue rug, it would be a great accent in the bathroom.
Jillian says
I love the blue rug!!!!
Mary - the boondocks blog says
Love what you have done so far. The lighter paint color brightens up the room without making it look smaller. I would definitely go with the grey colored rug for the bathroom. Looking forward to seeing how this progresses;. Oh and congrats on the pregnancy!
Erin @ Lemons, Lavender, & Laundry says
I’m not sure if it’s the images or reality, but the paint color in the bathroom looks more green than blue (although the square samples you showed look blue). If the paint color is truly more blue in color, then I love that blue rug on the left, if it’s more green, then I like the one on the right. So helpful 🙂
Tracy says
The paint color looks great! I prefer the rug on the left.

Love the mint color against that wood trim and either rug would be so cute!!
kathy says
Great choice to go with the leftover paint. It looks so pretty in that space!
Angie @ Postcards from the Ridge says
It’s funny how paint looks different on the wall than it does on the swatch! Your lighter color is so pretty. And I love the darker rug, but it all depends on how noticeable you want it to be. They’re both pretty!
Sierra says
I love a good bathroom reno! Loving those rugs you picked out too. This is a hard one, but I think I like the blue one a little more. Beautifully Candid
