Hi again, and welcome to Week 3 of the $100 Room Challenge hosted by our friend Erin of Lemons, Lavender, and Laundry. Make sure to take a peek at Week 1 and Week 2 of our remodel challenge where we introduced our space and showed you what we have been working on this month to restyle the room.
For this week, we are going to share with you how to make a DIY bathroom shelf and some towel hooks. We are so excited to let you know that we hardly had to purchase any new items for these two projects, just one item! They were made from pieces we already had and are reusing. This challenge is really letting us get creative!
Back in week 1, we decided that we needed to add a bit of visual interest to the blank wall above the toilet. Vicki’s vision was to add a chunky shelf or two with brackets for some decor pieces to sit atop. Originally we were going to purchase lumber and construct shelves, but Vicki remembered a salvaged piece we found while cleaning the shed last summer that would work perfect! So we grabbed the board and cut out the size we wanted for a shelf.
(Ok, this “pretty” board is actually a side rail from an old water bed that has been sitting in the rafters of the shed for about 15 years! Can you tell how old it is? Haha!)
After cutting we sanded it down using our electric sander. It had beveled edges and some rustic spots to it that would be perfect for the look Vicki wanted.
Once sanding was complete we laid the board out for some pre-stain, and stain. We applied 2 coats of this color stain. (P.S. Don’t forget to ventilate if your staining inside. We used our garage to stain since it is too cold outside here in Minnesota, but we still had to crack the doors for awhile!)
Once the stain was on and dried we sealed the wood with this sealer to keep any moisture from the bathroom out of the wood. Then all that was needed was the brackets! We ordered these pretty, oil-rubbed bronze brackets online and added them to the bottom of the board.
We measured where we wanted them first, then pre-drilled some holes, and screwed the brackets into the shelf.
Costs for this project:
- Board -$0 (Found item)
- Pre-stain & Stain – $0 (Already had on hand)
- Polycrylic – $0 (Already had)
- Brackets – $16.02 for the pair
Total Cost: $16.02
We didn’t want to share too much and spoil next week’s reveal, but here is the finished shelf complete with brackets, ready to go on the wall!
While we were doing this shelf project, we knew we were going to need boards for all of the towel hooks as well. So we found some small boards in our stash and cut those to size for a towel holder by the shower and for hand towels by the sink.
We rounded the edges of these boards so they weren’t so stark and pointy. Then we used the exact same pre-stain, and stain we used for the shelf. It was very easy to do everything all together for both the shelf and the towel hooks.
While planning for this makeover we decided to take all the hardware off, the mirrors down, and take apart the towel hooks so we can update them with a little spray paint. We first primed them all with metal primer, and then spray painted them using this spray paint.
O.K. how easy is this?! You get a completely new look, just by changing up the color. The towel hooks just need to be added to the wood pieces we cut and stained.
And a small peek of the “new” hardware on the bathroom cupboards.

- Spray Primer & Spray Paint – $0 (We had the primer and spray paint already on hand)
- Wood pieces – $0 (already had)
- Stain & Pre-stain – $0 (already had, same as above)
- Clear Finish Sealer – $0 (already had)
Total cost = FREE!
Now Vicki’s bathroom just needs to be put back together and decorated! We can’t wait to get all finished up and reveal the room to you all! I love the use of the old wood – and it looks fabulous! We hoard pieces of wood around here, and it makes me happy when I can dig out a scrap/trash piece and make it useful. I like the “new” hardware too!
