We will be the first to admit, it’s not easy to step out of your comfort zone when it comes to color. This spring, we have been trying hard to step out of our neutral color zone and embrace the brighter colors! So far we have used red, shades of blue and even GREEN! We have also tried our hand at mixing custom colors. It’s something we hadn’t previously done a lot of, but the end result is so worth it!

One of the pieces we mixed colors for was this beautiful bright teal dresser we recently restyled. (P.S. this dresser is so unique – it is a solid, heavy piece and all three drawers lock with one of those old skeleton keys. How cool is that?!)

This particular teal is a special one – not only because it is our favorite color, but because we were taught how to mix this color in a class we took from the master of chalk paint – Annie Sloan.

At the Junk Bonanza in Minneapolis last spring, Annie Sloan visited and taught a couple classes all about her paint and colors. What we loved in particular was when she asked us to mix two colors together to achieve a new look. With her guidance (and only three colors to choose from!) this is what came out of it! It was really a fun experience and inspired us to try different combinations.

But we didn’t stop with just mixing this custom color, we added clear and then black wax over the top in order to highlight all of the details and bring a beautiful depth to the color. New farmhouse style cup pulls on each drawer. Then to top it off we left the wood top original as it was already beautiful.

I can picture this in any room in the home. A buffet or coffee bar in the dining room or kitchen. A media console in the living, or serving it’s original purpose as a dresser in the bedroom.

Besides this custom color, we have recently began playing with mixing Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint! Some of you may have already seen our “Dreamy Light Blue Side Table” we restyled using two milk paint colors and some silver gilding. Once posted on our Etsy shop, it didn’t take long for this beauty to sell!

We have also created a lighter sage green/teal color we will be sharing soon! We can’t wait to show you!

In reality – while it may be hard to step out of your color comfort zone, taking a chance every once and a while can be totally worth it! Just play around on a sample first, you won’t regret it!
