It is here! It is finally time to reveal the bathroom makeover over at Kristen’s house we have been working on as part of the One Room Challenge! I feel like the last few weeks have just taken forever! It seemed like it took forever to redo the tub and shower area but in reality it took us about 2 weeks to completely finish. Which really isn’t that bad for DIY’ers!

But I really can’t believe our bathroom, which has taken over 2 years to begin, is finally done! It has been a long time coming. If you missed the beginning stages of this makeover go back and take a look at how everything went along the way by clicking through the links below.

So to take you back to the very beginning, here is what was accomplished in this makeover. As a reminder, below is what the bathroom looked like when we first moved in almost 3 years ago.

When we first moved there were some glaring items in the bathroom that we decided to change right away. The color of the walls was first, they were so dark it made the space feel so enclosed which is not what you typically want in an already small bathroom. So we began by painting it a light seafoam color. But while we were getting ready to paint – when we took the mirror off the wall there was a large gaping hole in between the studs where a medicine cabinet was previously! Ahhh! I swore when we viewed the house there was a medicine cabinet, but months later when we moved in and got a mirror I thought maybe it was my pregnancy brain acting up. But NOPE, I was correct! Needless to say we fixed the large hole, replaced the mirror and the dated light fixture. (HERE is where you can find our new light fixture)

But that was all we did until this October…

We had finally saved enough money in order to redo our tub and shower area, which was the main reason for joining in this challenge. It was finally time to get the dated and peeling-off-painted tub replaced so my two-year-old daughter could finally get out of her plastic baby tub!

After taking out the tub, putting the new tub back in and making sure the plumbing was all correct we could finally tile. But wait, before we could actually stick a tile to the wall we had to put up the cement board, tape it, and seal it… (Do you get the feeling we didn’t necessarily have a fun time doing all of this?!) Then came the tile! Like I mentioned in my previous post, the tiling wasn’t a hard project, it was just super time-consuming. It was a lot of late nights…

And just look at all of that beautiful subway tile! And I love the contrast of the new oil-rubbed bronze fixtures.We started this challenge with the tub and shower for many reasons. We wanted to make sure we had plenty of time to get it all finished, it was fairly major demo after all. We also had to schedule a weekend where our family could come help us. (Thank you to both of our brothers for all the help!)

Once that huge project was out of the way it was all downhill from there. I put a few coats of milk paint and looking glass spray over an old cabinet we are using as extra storage. Touched up the paint that was scuffed by the tub project, cut down and replaced baseboard trim. Little projects like that.

I had already made the two shelves previously for even more storage, but after adding the bull nose tile to edge the tub and surround the shelves were actually too long to center over the toilet! So I had to cut a little off each end and then sand, stain and seal the shelves again so they fit better. We lost about 2 inches total which wasn’t that big of a deal.

And then it came time to decorate! I had been online shopping for a new shower curtain since I first decided we were redoing the bathroom but it took an impromptu trip to TJ Maxx to find this pretty piece! I wanted something totally different, without being dark, so this floral was absolutely perfect! And right in that same aisle I found those pretty aqua rugs to help break up the grayness of the floor and the vanity. (Similar Rose Gold Soap Dispensers)Finding all the pieces I had been searching for for well over a month right in one aisle at the store was perfect! Those things tend to happen – when I am looking hard for something I can never find it, but when I take an impromptu shopping trip is when I always find just what I am looking for!

I also picked up a couple new hand towels and washcloths in different colors than gray, which was just getting dull to me. It was simple to use the pretty new towels as decor on the shelves which also serves as storage for them. One of our small risers we make holds jars of cotton swabs and Q-tips on the top shelf. And of course, I couldn’t put together our new bathroom without a bit of greenery! Real or faux, it doesn’t matter – greenery is always a must when I’m decorating!

Oooh this project was such a long time coming! I can definitely say that I am so proud that we took it on ourselves and accomplished this finished work. It was so daunting to begin even though we were taught how to tile. We learned a great deal, and I cannot begin to explain how awesome it feels to have it complete! Now that being said – I don’t think my husband and I would do this again. Mainly because our time is worth something too and all the extra time we spent triple checking things, we could have just had a completed bathroom must faster. It was hard to be without while it was all a big mess.
