It’s finally here! The big REVEAL! It has been a long journey these last 6 weeks for the spring One Room Challenge! And while our bedroom was not a complete gut type of makeover, we still had to redo pretty much every piece of furniture in the room. And we have finished! It is so satisfying and exciting when a project comes to completion. Especially when it works out just how you imagined it. Let’s jump right in to recap exactly what needed to be done, and share those beautiful “after” pictures!
If you need to catch up on the process from the last few weeks see them all by clicking through the links for each week.

To begin let’s take a look at how the bedroom looked before this challenge.
We pretty much had nothing in our bedroom since moving in 2 years ago. It got put to the very end of the long “To-Do” list. I mean, come on…we were using a barstool as a nightstand on one side of the bed! That cracks me up now to see it! The orange-y dresser wasn’t doing anything in there either, and I hadn’t had a headboard on my bed since being in high school!
Let’s also take a look back at our list of items that needed to be completed for this room.
Purchase new beddingPaint “new-to-me” dresserFind and makeover nightstands OR build nightstandsBuild a headboard- New curtains or DIY curtains
Make or purchase decorative pillowsRug for under the bedNew Light Fixture (?)Paint hexagon wall hanging (Already have, just needs a makeover)Purchase a farmhouse riser for top of dresser from ourStore (We LOVE our risers and plan to use them all throughout our homes!)Decorate
We were able to get everything finished but the curtains. Pretty good in my book! I mentioned last week that I was having a hard time finding something I really liked. Well I made one last quick shopping trip to look and still didn’t find anything. I’m not upset though, I know that I will be able to find something I like, it is just going to take a bit longer.
But without further ado…lets take a look at what the bedroom looks like now after 6 weeks of work and a very low budget. Come on in!
This is what you see when you first walk in through our bedroom door! The large and awkwardly placed shelf is now gone, and in it’s place are some pretty little shiplap style photo frames of my little family. It feels a lot lighter in that spot now. You get a great view of the beautiful new rug and mini chandelier we purchased too! I wasn’t really sure how I felt about a rug over carpet before I purchased but I thought I would try it. And I am glad I did! I absolutely love it – it was a great way to bring in more pattern and is better flooring without having to install new (which wasn’t in our budget).
The change in the dresser area was pretty drastic! We went from an orange-y highboy to a gray toned lower piece with curved drawers. It is a tad bit smaller space-wise which forced us to figure out which clothes we wanted to keep and which we could donate. I was then able to decorate on and above it! Those beautiful green and aqua jars were purchased at the Junk Bonanza a few weeks ago. Vicki did a great job finding items for me while I was on vacation! I was thrilled with all she picked up!
And that large octagon piece we DIY’ed! See that post HERE. It would be super easy to replicate that with any kind of large frame or build.
And on to my favorite part…the bed! I created new nightstands out of a vanity, built the headboard and bought a beautiful new quilt and bedspread which I absolutely adore! I find myself making the bed everyday now since I put that bedding on!
I feel like the lamps I found HERE work so much better now too. I was really debating my choice of lamp when I first brought them into this room, but now they work so much better than before. (You can find more lamps we love HERE). The bed looks much more “finished” too now that there is a headboard as well as decor on the walls. That little half moon architectural piece above it was an antique mall find! It works perfectly in that spot!
We mentioned in one of the previous posts that we would be decorating with a lot of items that we actually make and sell in our store! That beautiful farmhouse riser you see above is one of two in the room. (The other size is on the dresser) When we first started creating these, we didn’t know how popular they would become. But we can see why, they seriously are perfect for pretty much any place in the home, and both Vicki and I have several in our own homes! (To see more ways to style risers see our post HERE and to see our smaller sizes click HERE)
The three pillows on the bed were also made by us! We were in the store one day working and I just randomly put these three together, not even meaning to rearrange, but I saw them and immediately thought of my bedroom! So of course I had Vicki make up a set for my bed! I am actually really excited to have one of those teal bird pillows. They have been popular for us and I have adored it, but I just didn’t know where to put one in my house. But it is seriously perfect for my new french farmhouse bedroom! It adds the perfect pop of color to the bed and matches with the rest of the teal and aqua hues I have going on.
The picture below shows a closer look at both the headboard that we built and the nightstands we created out of an old, beat up vanity. They were both some of our most time-consuming projects for this space. The nightstands had so many spots where the veneer was peeling and was pretty frustrating to take off and replace. However, it was totally worth all the work! They turned out beautifully and are exactly what I imagined.
And the headboard was a fairly simple build. (We shared exactly how to do it in our last post!) I love that I can create one-of-a-kind pieces for my home. I find a sense of excited satisfaction to share all of the things Vicki and I create and love that will forever be in my home. I can someday share with my daughter that “Mommy built that!”. Actually she already has some kind of inkling of what mom does. While building this, she would hear the saw start in the garage and would point and tell her dad “Mama!”.

And that is my new master bedroom! Even though it is a tiny space, I feel like it makes a big impact! It feels so nice to have a finished (and pretty) room! Like I mentioned, I find that I make my bed every single day now and it just feels calming and satisfying to have the room done.
We thank you all so much for following along on my french farmhouse bedroom makeover for this One Room Challenge series!
