Hi all! Welcome to week 2 of the One Room Challenge where we are making over my master bedroom! We get 6 weeks to completely makeover one room in my house. Make sure you are following along with all of the handpicked designers and home bloggers for this challenge over on the One Room Challenge website. They are truly amazing!
If you missed last week’s post all about my bedroom inspirations and mood board, as well as the great-big-long list of everything that needs to be done, visit that post HERE.
Otherwise for this week we jumped right into our furniture makeovers to get a big one out of the way at the beginning. My bedroom needed a new dresser, new nightstands and we are building a headboard as well. So…that’s pretty much ALL the furniture in my room that is changing! And of course, being on a budget (and if you know Vicki and I) we tend to makeover or build our own furniture as opposed to buying new. The old pieces are the best! And come on – how cool is it to build your own furniture!
This dresser was actually a craigslist find from last summer. Vicki, my daughter Emme, and I all went to pick this one up in a nearby town. That’s how it goes most of time, we have to take two vehicles – one car for the baby in the backseat and the other car for the furniture piece! We brought it back to my house where it sat for months since I didn’t have time to paint it during the holidays.
Now this challenge presented me with the perfect opportunity to get this finished! I went over and over about what color to choose for this piece. I debated on white, but wasn’t sure if I wanted white against my white wall. I thought about going a bold color, but then didn’t know what color to choose! I also like to use color in my accent decor, just in case I get sick of it! So I decided on a beautiful “greige” color from the Miss Mustard Seed’s milk paint line that we retail at our store.
I had just finished a different empire style dresser in this color and absolutely fell in love with it! It was a neutral but different than white which made me happy. It was a quick couple coats of milk paint with bonding agent added since the dresser had a very shiny surface. It chipped in just a couple spots which was perfect because I planned on distressing it anyway. My husband said that he loves it when I distress our furniture because then if our dog or our 2 year old bangs the piece we don’t have to worry about touching it up! I thought that was hilarious but also a great point!
After sealing it with my favorite wax ever (again Miss Mustard Seed’s) the piece became buttery smooth to the touch and absolutely perfect for our space. It is a bit less roomy than our previous dresser so we had to get rid of some clothes, but I was all too happy to do that! While sometimes it can be hard, I really love going through old clothes and just getting rid of items we don’t wear anymore.
And to top it off new black handles were added! To us, the hardware is like jewelry. A piece really comes together with it’s new hardware! I didn’t want anything too flashy for this piece, and because they were 5 inches from center to center it was a bit difficult to find ones I liked. A lot of times older pieces come with great hardware already, but I was missing half of these handles when I purchased it so that wasn’t an option for me. But I’m loving these simple ones that I found HERE.
My master bedroom makeover for the One Room Challenge is off to a darn good start I would say! We still need to decorate the wall above this dresser as well as style the top differently. I have some ideas and am working on a project for the wall already. But one piece of furniture is completed and checked off the list and there are only two more to go! I already have an idea for nightstands, it is a big project, but nothing we can’t handle! We are going on vacation this week, so I’m thinking a couple DIY decor projects will be finished for next week and then we will have to jump right in to our furniture again.
Stay tuned with us for my bedroom makeover and don’t forget to see what all the other designers and bloggers are up to with their room makeovers! See you next week!
