We have been following along with Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint for quite some time now, and when I heard there was going to be a new color being added to the line, I couldn’t contain my excitement! (It probably helped that they led up to the announcement right around the joyous spirit of Christmas time.) Then on Christmas day we checked online for the newest color and it’s unique name.
It was called “Aviary” – a dusky gray-blue color meant to match an antique French bird cage of Marian Parson’s (aka Miss Mustard Seed).
My initial reaction wasn’t exactly what you would think of this beautiful color. My first thought was actually:
“Oh. OK. Another blue color.”
But hold on, Kristen, you LOVE blue. And Vicki and I both LOVE to paint with blue!
So as I kept thinking, reading, and looking at the pretty pictures of this color, the more excited I became! It became more of a “Alright! I’m liking this! I can’t wait to see it in person!” type of reaction.
And yes, once it arrived and we got to mixing and painting, we could see why they chose to create and produce this beautiful color!
It is just absolutely gorgeous, sometimes gray and sometimes blue. Perfect in it’s original form, but when deepened with antiquing wax – Wow, Oh, Wow.
That is how we redid this hutch, and it turned out so lovely! It chipped and distressed in just a few places, and with a bright new interior it transformed into a completely different piece of furniture.
We also replaced the warped shelves and instead of painting them the same white as the interior, we decided to stain the wood to give it some beautiful contrast. (THIS is the color we used) And isn’t it just perfect now?!
It would be perfect in any style of home, used for those fine china dishes. Or for those farmhouse styled homes, a collection of Ironstone would be beautiful. I have an ever growing collection of Ironstone, which someday I hope to upgrade my small sideboard into a larger cabinet similar to this one!

I love this color and how everything turned out. We have my husband’s parents antique hutch that I’ve been contemplating about painting, but wasn’t sure how to present this to hubby; but this color might just do it.

This color is just beautiful! A smokey gray blue. We don’t feel at all bad about updating a piece with paint!
