We love a great Drum Table! These antique round tables add such character to a room. Our decor style is to mix old with new so by taking an old piece of furniture and giving it a facelift you have the perfect item for your room.
We already painted one drum table but had two more in our inventory and wanted to try some different techniques! The design for this one was to stain the top dark and then do the base a cream with a glaze in the creases.

Lucky for us this table was in fantastic shape and only needed minimal prepwork! Always start by removing any hardware. We took the drawer pull and the metal feet off before beginning. To achieve a dark stained top we sanded the table top completely down to the raw wood using an electric sander. It did have some shallow scratches on the top so sanding it down was the best option for us to get rid of those as well as prep the piece for stain. We also lightly sanded the rest of the piece to rough up the finish a bit.
We decided staining the top first would be best to ensure no stain accidentally got onto our cream paint. We used gel stain in a very warm and beautiful dark brown.
You can use either a regular bristle brush or a sponge brush to apply the stain, and in this case we used a sponge brush. We applied the stain to the very top and around the top edge, and allowed the stain to set for about a minute before wiping the excess off. Because we had sanded the wood down the stain soaked in really well. Allow your table top to dry (about 8 hours) then you can decide if you would like a second coat or not. In this case we did end up applying one more stain coat for this table to produce the look we wanted.
After the stain was finished we painted the pedestal of the table and the drawer front a cream latex paint we had previously used for Kristen’s walls! The undertones were more white than yellow because we knew we wanted to use a glaze over the top and we felt a yellow/cream may look too dirty.
The application was two coats for this part to get that even coverage. (Latex paint has a dry time of two hours before re-coating)
To “up the ante” for this piece, we wanted to give it more of an old/antiqued look so we grabbed this Decorative glaze. We used a sponge brush to glide this over all of the painted cream. Work in sections for this because you will want to wipe it off fairly quickly.
We brushed an entire section, waited about 5-10 seconds and then started to wipe off the excess with a cotton rag (or in our case an old t-shirt!)
After all of the cream parts were glazed and wiped you just wait until the piece is dry before you can apply your sealant. We once again used Polycrylic for this piece to protect it. I especially like polycrylic for table tops because it protects very well since they get a lot of use. (Also it only takes 24 hours until you can use the piece normally!) I applied 5 coats to the top and 3 for the rest of the piece.
After your sealant you are done!
The cream paint with glaze is one of our favorite looks and adding that dark stained table top makes the piece different. We loved how this drum table turned out and can’t wait for it to find the perfect home!

Hi Kristen and Vicki, I love how this table turned out! One quick question. Did you apply the decorative glaze all over the white paint or only in the creases?
Thank you so much Erin! We applied the glaze over the entire white paint! This works with latex paint because you can wipe it off. It doesn’t work as well with chalky style paints because it soaks in too fast!
