Progress in our Kitchen

Week 1 / Week 2  / Week 3 / Week 4 / Week 5 / Week 6 (The Reveal)

We have gotten a lot done since last week. The cabinets are completely painted, doors and all! We moved on to the walls to get rid of that yellow color I was not very fond of. I picked a beautiful light beige color for all the main rooms upstairs. It was dark before, and since we have some good natural light, I wanted to brighten all the rooms, and bring the color in with my decor.

Next to the white colored cabinets this color is just gorgeous! (And oh my goodness was I so glad to get rid of that yellow!)

We had a bit of a problem with the hardware for the cabinets. We were going to replace the hinges since they were not the color we wanted. However, when we went to the store to grab some new ones, the dimensions were all wrong. I wanted the exact same style, just a different color and I couldn’t find any to match the holes that were already drilled! (Ours must have been too old) Darn, so we opted to spray paint the original hinges instead! That way we would save money and wouldn’t have to fill all the holes on the frames and doors! This is what we used to update the hardware:

We have painted hardware before so we knew it would work. To see a tutorial go here -> DIY Hardware Update.

More exciting news for our kitchen makeover…we now have pendant lights!

While painting, my wonderful dad (who just happens to be an electrician) came by to install pendant lights above the peninsula and the sink. He had to finagle some wires up through the wall and bulkhead, cut new holes, and hang them all.

(There he is, hard at work!)

Originally there was a can light above the sink and since the hole was larger than the pendant we just purchased a small ceiling medallion to cover the large hole! We spray painted the white plastic to match the pendant. And voila! New lights! I’m so excited we were able to get this done. The bulkhead had no purpose before and my husband and I like a lot of light in the kitchen when cooking.

My husband has also been tirelessly working on painting the trim in other rooms, and this room is next!! I will be happy to get my white trim to match everything in this room.

And there it is my friends! My kitchen so far. I was able to clean up a bit and we put the drawers in, but need to get the doors on yet. The colors are so much better and I’m actually not hating the countertop as much as I did! Not that it’s going to stay forever, but now I am thinking I want some darker colored butcher block countertop to go with my white cabinets (when the budget allows of course).
